How To Clean and Take Care of Your Sheepskin Rugs

Yellow Earth sheepskin rugs are made using genuine, A-grade Australian sheepskins. We pride ourselves in providing our customers with all-natural products of the highest quality, and with the right care and attention, your sheepskin rug will stay plush and fluffy for the years to come.

Like all things found in nature, sheep have evolved over the years to protect themselves from any environmental threats. This includes developing unique properties in their sheepskin to keep themselves clean.

Long Wool Sheepskin Rugs

Something you might not know about sheepskins is that they have natural anti-bacterial, hypo-allergenic, dirt repelling, as well as water and flame resistant properties. That’s why dirt, like dust and dry particles, can easily be shaken off your sheepskin rug.

BUT…

This doesn’t mean you can spill a glass of red wine on your sheepskin rug and expect it to slide right off.

Despite their unique characteristics, it is important to still be careful around sheepskin products as lot of foods, liquids and man-made chemicals used in our everyday life are not found in nature, so sheepskins naturally can’t protect themselves against them.

Take Care of Your Sheepskin.

  • Keep it out of direct sunlight and heated areas. Instead leave it in a cool, open/well-ventilated area.
  • Brushing your long wool rugs occasionally with a wire brush will help keep them fluffy and prevent knots in the wool fibres. However, this is not recommended for our short wool rugs, for example baby lambskins and medical rugs, as the natural crimps in short wool fibres are important in promoting their pressure regulating properties.
  • If you choose to vacuum your sheepskin rugs, be sure to avoid using vacuum heads with a rotating attachment, especially when vacuuming long wool rugs. Instead, use a standard vacuum nozzle.
  • Avoid spills on your rug, as stains can be tricky to remove on sheepskins and frequent washing can gradually strip off its natural properties.

Woolskin Shampoo

Our sheepskin rugs can be hand or machine washed in cold or lukewarm water, but ONLY with sheepskin-safe, bleach free washing detergent, such as our Woolskin Shampoo. It is important that you use cleaning liquids which are approved for sheepskin products, as the chemicals found in normal washing detergent are too harsh and can damage the quality of sheepskins. Our Australian made Woolskin shampoo is specially formulated for sheepskin products, using only natural ingredients such as Tea Tree oil for a gentle clean.
